NOAA Weather Unofficial

This weather app is not affiliated with NOAA or the National Weather Service. Products provided by NOAA are in the public domain, and this app's use of those products is compliant with NOAA/NWS terms of use.

This app provides forecasts, animated radar, hourly forecast, and current conditions, all in an intuitive and easy to use interface. Just the information you need, provided accurately, quickly, and for your exact location.

★ "A no-nonsense approach to show weather data on your phone, but done well and great looking" - Android Central

This app uses NOAA point forecasts from your GPS location to get the most localized weather available. Point forecasts are great for climbing, hiking, skiing, or any outdoor activity where weather from a nearby city isn't accurate enough.

GPS on the phone will provide the most accurate location, but usually isn't needed. Nearby cell towers and Wi-Fi networks can also provide this information, and will be checked first to save time and battery. You can also enter a location manually.

To provided highly localized forecasting, this app uses point forecasts from the National Weather Service (NOAA/NWS), and is therefore only available in the US.

If there is severe weather you will see a red warning icon in the corner of the current conditions icon. You can press this icon for more details. This app currently does NOT support severe weather alerts or notifications. NOAA is providing this service directly through cell carriers. You can read more about the service at

There are also several differently sized widgets available which can be placed on your homescreen to provide some basic weather information, without the need to open the app.

Forecast discussion is available through the menu button.

Permission: Location
This app requires your location to provide you with the most accurate weather. This is fundamental to how the app works. You can still add manual locations as well if you prefer.

Permission: Photos/Media/Files
This permission is required by Google Maps so that it can cache map tiles for faster loading. It sounds like the app is doing something with your photos or media, but it is not. The permission means that the app has permission to access your files (which includes photos and media), but does not mean they are actually being accessed. It is a subtle but important distinction. Contact me if you have further questions about this.

These are the non-simplified permissions as listed in the Android manifest:
android.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION" (location access listed above)
android.permission.ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE" (check for network connection)
android.permission.INTERNET" (download weather)
android.permission.VIBRATE" (for zoom feedback on old radar)
android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" (this is Photos/Media/Files listed above)" (required by google maps)

Provides the most reliable weather forecast. The probability indexes could be more useful/valuable if they were updated with real time information (e.g. The probability of rain at xx:xx o'clock is listed as a certain % chance of occurring -- when xx:xx o'clock arrives, it either is or is not raining, but the probability index still states the same percentage odds that it previously forecasted instead of adjusting numbers based upon actual-occurrence data...). It lacks a real-time radar feature.

All Pluses: Good daily descriptions under Forecast tab, including precipitation (rain, snow) amounts. Under Hourly, can choose Tab Options to display measures of interest, i.e. Feels like, Dewpoint, etc. - Great! Radar only shows local region, can't pinch to see wider area, but that's ok. Play buttons give a 1-hr window of past action but would like ability to see [the] Future - who wouldn't 😉 Not cluttered with ads and videos - Good.

UI is much better than other weather apps, more concise, more intuitive, more usable. Hourly forecast does not work, however. Just get a download error message. Should get rid of that tab then until it works. Also notifications of alerts would be nice, since I'm using a Wi-Fi tablet, and can't get text alerts. Edit: Yes, apparently the missing hourly forecast was just a temporary thing for my location. I see it now. Second edit: four years later, this is still my weather app. I'm bumping my rating up to five.

Very easy to use. Simple drop down style on forecast page. Uses NOAA weather. Small banner ads across the bottom that are not bothersome like other apps . Like that you can readily access radar. The ability to switch between the Google map and classic style radar is a very nice feature. My go too weather app. Only complaint is on the Observation tab the data is overlapping on my phone screen, can't really read it. Haven't been able to find a way to stop that from happening.

Otto Sauer

Reluctantly dropped it from 5 to 3 stars. It's shortcomings have little to do with the developer as far as I can tell. I love the layout, and there's an enormous amount of info available. The app itself is great. Everything you need, easy to use snd fairly reliable. NOAA seems to have cancelled all the weather stations near my area, though, and that unfortunately impacts practical usability when I can't see conditions closer to home than 30 miles away.

Info is reliable, it's easy to use, radar is easy to read. Could use ability to get weather in another city without having to save to allowed three. Update 1.23.19 I drive a big rig all over the country. I refer to this app daily as part of my trip planning. It is reliable and easy to reliable that I have made several expensive decisions for safety reasons based on the information from this app and am glad I did.

Kelli Braun

This is my favorite weather app. Not only is it direct, meaning only giving me the forecast I'm wanting and none of the useless in depth items I need to know nothing about, it's also usually correct! Best by far! Still my favorite, my friends ask which weather app I use!

Molly Dooley PhD

Been stuck on - 17°f for days now. No local forecast available half the time. Deleting it now. Reinstalled for a few days and it worked but now it's the same old same old. Worthless. Stuck at - 20°f for days and no cure current conditions. Don't waste your time with this app.

Miss Kristin Anderson V

The official NOAA has been doing weather since I can remember and so far they've done a wonderful job. I'll give this app 4 stars. it does everything it says. It could have a desktop Imaging system that allows to see the current weather outside on your smartphone rainy- raindrops falling, sunny-sun shining, Google has an app just like that I'd love to see it happen with NOAA. a clock/weather widget for the main screen would be awsume..Do that you earn 5 stars

Stewart Kautzer

I would rate it higher, but your conditions for going to the next level are unacceptable. I can understand giving you permission to know my location, but what business do you have wanting permission to my photos. How do my photos play into the operation of a weather app? I still like to feel that I have a little privacy left in this world.
